Be the inspiration!

Inspiring relationships: more than just collaboration

Inspiring relationships can make all the difference. Every day our lives are enriched by the people we have a great connection to, which includes the people we work alongside and collaborate with professionally. When you have a mutually beneficial, two-way dialogue with someone it can inspire and elevate your work. It’s about learning, growing, and challenging each other in a way that is useful.

What makes an inspiring relationship?

An inspiring relationship goes beyond mere collaboration. These relationships:

  • Encourage growth you push each other to be better. It might be by offering new perspectives, sharing expertise and experiences of similar situations, or simply being a sounding board for ideas. Someone who can see the gaps, the pitfalls and ways to improve an idea.
  • Foster support there’s a balance of giving and receiving. You help each other through challenges and celebrate successes together. The greatest support is when you’re able to point out the value of all the small wins or the gains made from a bad situation.
  • Promote honest feedback when you respect someone, you value their input, even when it highlights areas for improvement. No one likes to be criticised, even if it’s given constructively or with the best of intentions. An inspiring relationship sets the tone needed to take it on board and turn the negative input, into a positive output.
  • Create a safe space for discussion the fear of judgement is the biggest barrier to creative thinking and problem solving. Your inspiring relationship is home to a safe space where you are able to openly share concerns, ideas, and potential solutions without the fear stopping you from moving forward.

The power of professional relationships

I’m fortunate to have a few of these inspiring relationships in my life right now. These are people who don’t just do their job well, they bring positivity, knowledge, and perspective to every conversation.

I’ve solved many problems just by being able to vocalise the challenge I’m faced with, often that’s all that’s needed for me to see where the weak points are in my plan. Sometimes, just being around certain people is enough to make you strive for more, strive to be better. Have you ever wondered why you’ve spent the last hour watching a documentary on bog weed or sandblasting? It’s because the person talking about it is sharing their knowledge… and their passion. Passion is catching!

And let’s not skip right past motivation.  For many reasons I’m usually a motivated – and self-motivating – person, but sometimes I’m overcome with a “I can’t be bothered” attitude. It’s awful. It’s like a wave of lethargy overtakes me. If you are someone who struggles with motivation, then buddying up with someone who has an abundance of it can be a great leveller; they imbibe you with some much-needed pep and your natural quietness reduces their working volume down to something much easier to live with. Inspiration doesn’t have to be active, it can be something altogether more benign… or maybe sublime.

Why these relationships matter

Work is more than just completing tasks—it’s about connection. The right relationships can make even the most challenging days more manageable. They provide reassurance when things go wrong and excitement when things go right.

If you’re lucky enough to have these kinds of relationships, cherish them. Nurture them. And if you don’t have them yet, seek them out. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, support you, and inspire you to be better. Because at the end of the day, the best work isn’t done in isolation, it’s done through meaningful connections.
